  Join Esther Perel,  as she shares her  bold, provocative new take on intimacy and sex that shakes up traditional thinking about keeping desire alive in a long-term relationship.

In this 1&1/2 day training Esther will probe the ambiguities of love and desire, and explore ways to balance our clients need for security and closeness with their quest for separateness and passion.

 In this intensive training you will learn how to create a therapeutic space for partners to explore sources of, and solutions to their sexual problems. The workshop will present a theoretical framework and clinical applications to help therapists effectively work with desire issues in couples from all sexual orientations.

The workshop includes didactic material, case presentations, video vignettes and experiental exercises to explore the bonds and conflicts of love and desire through a multi-cultural lens. 9 CEUs credits pending with NASW. 2 CEUs pending for Friday night public talk.

Participants will learn how to:

•    Invert the traditional therapeutic priorities using the sexual relationship as a lens into the individual and the couple¹s dynamics.
•    Map the connections between partner’s attachment orientation and their sexual feelings and behaviors.
•    Understand how our emotional history shapes our erotic blueprints and expresses itself in the physicality of sex.
•   Learn why increased emotional intimacy can lead to decreased sexual desire.
•    Help couples balance their need for security and closeness with their quest for separateness and passion.
•    Gain a broader understanding of Porn, kink and beyond: Atypical sexual behaviors.

    We will:
•    Develop therapeutic interventions to unlock erotic blocks stemming from shame, fear, and guilt and trauma.
•    Plumb the depth, complexity and healing qualities of our erotic imagination, and show couples how to use fantasy as a healthy and enriching imaginative tool.
•    Facilitate clients voicing their erotic longings and actively move beyond their comfort zone into an expansive and fully charged sexuality.
•   Learn experiential exercises to cultivate eroticism between partners and help them take emotional risks to open up sexual communication.
•    Help couples cultivate playfulness, anticipation and mystery in and out of the bedroom.
•    Learn a nuanced therapeutic approach to work with extra-marital relations, past and present, fantasized or real, secret or revealed.
•    Explore Transference and counter-transference when working with sexual issues.

Biography: Esther Perel, one of the worlds most respected voices on erotic intelligence, is the author of Mating in Captivity, now available in 25 languages. Perel lecture widely around the world and brings a rich multicultural perspective to her work as a couples and family therapist in New York City. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, an acknowledged authority on couple therapy, cross-cultural relations, and culture and sexuality.


Ms. Perel serves on the faculty of The Family Studies Unit, Department of Psychiatry, New York University Medical Center and The International Trauma Studies Program affiliated with Columbia University. She is a member of the American Family Therapy Academy and the Society for Sex Therapy and Research.


Fluent in nine languages, Ms. Perel is frequent keynote speaker around the world. She has been interviewed in leading publications such as The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Vogue, More, (Haaretz, Stern, La Republica, The Guardian and the Observer, The Sydney Morning Herald, and the Australian.). Esther was named one of Elle Magazine's 2007 IntELLEligentia and she is the recipient of the 2009 book award for Society for Sex therapy and Research.
